CBD and Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a chronic pain disorder, a long-term condition that causes profound pain all over the body.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

As well as widespread pain, people with fibromyalgia may also have:

  • increased sensitivity to pain; even the slightest touch can be painful
  • extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • muscle stiffness
  • difficulty sleeping
  • problems with memory and concentration also referred to as ‘fibro-fog’
  • headaches or migraines
  • irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a digestive condition that causes stomach pain and bloating

fibromyalgia

What Causes Fibromyalgia? Though the exact cause is not clear, it is thought to relate to abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in the way the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and nerves) process the pain signals that are carried around the body.

fibromyalgia

It is a condition that affects more women than men. There is no specific test to diagnose the condition and as the symptoms are similar to many other conditions, it is often difficult to diagnose.   In many cases the condition has been known to be triggered by a physical, traumatic or emotional event such as injury, infection, bereavement and even childbirth.  However, it has also been suggested that it could be an inherited condition i.e. certain gene mutations are responsible for this condition thereby ‘running’ in certain families.

Is there a Cure or Treatment for Fibromyalgia? There is currently no cure BUT  it has been said that complementary  treatments and lifestyle changes such as a more plant based diet help manage symptoms and improve quality of daily living. Studies have also shown that supplements such as vitamins A, C, D and E and minerals such as calcium and magnesium also have a part to play in reducing pain in some; just one of the debilitating symptoms of this condition.

Use of CBD supplements is emerging as the new  ‘go to’ supplement for many. It must be stressed that there is no medical evidence or claim to support CBD as a cure for fibromyalgia.  However, there have been case studies where using CBD has shown to make great improvement in a person’s health and wellbeing; lessening pain and in turn improving mood and aiding better sleep.

CBD supplements can be taken in many ways; CBD oil drops and tinctures being the more favoured but it is also available in form of gummies, capsules and topicals such as balm, bath salts and creams. It comes in various strengths and so the percentage of CBD varies accordingly.  There is no universal measure for CBD.  Therefore, how much to take is down to the individual and  dependent on many factors such as weight, ailment, medical history to name a few.  It is suggested that the best way would be to start on lower dose and varying it to the point where it works best for you.

Oils

CBD products sourced from a reputable Supplier is crucial where all products are backed up by lab reports and have undergone rigorous lab tests that have been certified.

FIBROMYALGIAOils and tinctures taken directly under the tongue have almost an instantaneous effect and can last up to several hours. CBD oils and tinctures can also be added to drink and food with more and more people enjoying CBD infused coffees and teas or simply added to water or shakes. CBD is so versatile you can even bake with it (pl read our blog on Baking with CBD).

Do you get a ‘high’ from CBD?  A question that is often asked and the short the answer is “No.”  CBD in itself is a non psychoactive compound. At this present time, CBD products in the UK can only have a maximum THC content of 0.2% which is important to look for when choosing a product.  THC is the chemical compound responsible for causing the ‘high’ and often associated with cannabis use.

As with any supplement prescribed or otherwise, always seek medical advice before use.

Positive Benefits to CBD – Healthy Lifestyle

Clinical trials for the use of CBD  have demonstrated very positive results. Studies around the substance’s ability to promote a healthier well-being are very encouraging. These studies go all the way back to the 1970s.

CBD also shows promise to help many people improve their quality of life.  The important thing to bear in mind is that CBD is no cure-all and research is limited. Once again,  we suggest that anyone considering use of CBD as their daily routine should always consult their doctor especially if you have underlying medical conditions.

Final Thoughts – Healthy Lifestyle

More research needs to be done on CBD, but there are signs that CBD can help people feel better. The endorsement from the World Health Organisation will only accelerate growing interest in the therapeutic potential of CBD. Just keep in mind that with any emerging product, especially as it relates to your health, it is important to do your research thus, protecting yourself from bad information and if in doubt, always consult your doctor prior to purchasing.
