Anxiety and CBD

The following account is that of my co-partner who wishes to share her experience on a topic that is close to the hearts of many… anxiety.
To start with, here’s a short verse that she penned on the subject; perhaps you too can resonate with this.
Anxiety… experienced by many of all ages and comes in many forms; in my case it is mostly social anxiety. Where many enjoy meeting friends for meals or socialising with colleagues after work, I dread it. I’d rather go for an interview (not that I am particularly good at it mind you). All kind of things run through my mind such as “What shall I talk about?” “Will they enjoy my company?” “Do they really want me there?” At first I used to avoid the issue and felt embarrassed to let friends and colleagues know. I would get myself into a terrible state but just to be socially accepted, I would agree to the invitation only to back out with an excuse nearer the date.
My friends and colleagues had this notion that I was this calm, methodical person who liked to joke; little did they know that like the swan, I had a cool exterior outwardly but paddled like mad underwater, metaphorically speaking!
As time went by, the topic of anxiety came to the forefront through media; documentaries and celebrities voicing their own experiences. So ‘armed’ with the knowledge that I was not alone, I researched it and it was through research and speaking to others that I found ways of managing it;just talking about it was a relief. It was also at this point that I discovered the benefits of CBD, in particular CBD oil. It soon became and still is, part of my daily well-being.
In recent times, I have used CBD in ways other than taking it orally; such as baking with it. For those of you who have read the previous blog on baking, will have noted its versatility and for those of you who have yet to discover , try your hand at baking CBD cookies, cup-cakes or the ever-popular CBD infused brownies.
I have yet to try CBD tinctures in cocktails and as and when I do, I will be happy to share the recipes for you to enjoy.
So now for the ‘science’ bit; in brief and as I understand it…
What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol. This is a naturally occurring chemical compound also known as a cannabinoid. CBD is non-psychoactive which means that you cannot get ‘high’ on it but benefit instead from its many properties for health related issues such as anxiety.
How does CBD work in the body to help with anxiety?
We all have a complex signalling system within our bodies knows as the endocannabinoid system or ECS (abbreviation). There are three components to the endocannabinoid system ie: receptors, enzymes, and endocannabinoids.
There are two types of receptors: CB1 and CB2.
CB1 receptors are primarily in the central nervous system and are responsible for governing co-ordination, movement, pain, appetite, memory, mood, and other functions.
CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system; especially the immune cells.
Research shows that CBD ‘activates’ the serotonin receptor (a neurotransmitter that is associated with a general sense of well-being); by doing so, it enhances a person’s mood; acting if you wish as an anti-depressant.
How to take CBD and in what form?
It really boils down to personal preference. CBD comes in various strengths. CBD oil is most popular; taken directly under the tongue.
Tinctures in shakes, hot/cold drinks and water is another option and if you wish to take the guess work out of things, there are capsules available on the market. Some also supplement the oils and the tinctures with gummies/chewables which are known to have very small amount of CBD.
There are so many CBD products on the market to choose from. However, regardless of what option you go for, as someone who is taking it for the first time, it is always recommended that you start on a low dose. Furthermore, I cannot stress the importance of consulting with your doctor especially if you have a known medical condition that it may impact on. Lastly, always buy from a reputable supplier who can provide you with lab reports to show its authenticity and the fact that it is within industry standards e.g. UK law requires that the maximum amount of THC (chemical compound which is responsible for the ‘high’), must not exceed 0.2% but that being said, CBD itself DOES NOT get you high.
So while I have focussed mainly on my own experience of social anxiety, I am aware that there are others who suffer from phobias, panic disorder, post-stress disorders, OCD and other related conditions that I have not touched upon. I also appreciate that CBD is not a ‘fix for all’ supplement but I hope that very soon you too can see and perhaps share the benefits that CBD products have to offer with your own stories to tell.

Positive Benefits to CBD – Healthy Lifestyle
Clinical trials for the use of CBD have demonstrated very positive results. Studies around the substance’s ability to promote a healthier well-being are very encouraging. These studies go all the way back to the 1970s.
CBD also shows promise to help many people improve their quality of life. The important thing to bear in mind is that CBD is no cure-all and research is limited. Once again, we suggest that anyone considering use of CBD as their daily routine should always consult their doctor especially if you have underlying medical conditions.
Final Thoughts – Healthy Lifestyle
More research needs to be done on CBD, but there are signs that CBD can help people feel better. The endorsement from the World Health Organisation will only accelerate growing interest in the therapeutic potential of CBD. Just keep in mind that with any emerging product, especially as it relates to your health, it is important to do your research thus, protecting yourself from bad information and if in doubt, always consult your doctor prior to purchasing.
